Indian War Era US Army Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Leather Rifle Sling – 4th Pattern. The leather is soft and supple. The leather has darkened with age, dark brown in color. This is the 4th pattern sling with the wide hooks and oval holes. This is an early 4th Pattern one piece leather sling, not one of the more common ones made from two savalaged civil war slings sewn together. There are some surface cracks in the sling and some wrinkling. It has the brass stud, and a reinforcing repair at the end of the sling, see photo. These slings are getting very difficult to find. This is the 4th pattern sling with the wide hooks and oval holes. This is a one piece sling, NOT the more common sling made from two savalaged civil war slings sewen together. There are some surface cracks in the sling and some wrinkling. It looks like a repair at the end of the sling with the brass stud, see photo. These slings are getting very difficult to find. US CIVIL WAR / INDIAN WARS ERA? LEATHER RIFLE SLING with DOUBLE WIRE BRASS HOOK M. I looked at this with a few people and we all believe it is a Civil War to Indian Wars era sling. It has all of the physical characteristics of an 1800s leather rifle sling. Sharps, Spencer or Henry type of rifle. 51 ¼ inches of leather and the total length is 28 ¼ inches. Keeper hook is in very good and straight condition. It is securely fastened within the end of the sling with strong leather and stitching. On the backside of the sling, there is a hole reinforcement of 24 ¾ inches. Of that, about 2 ¼ inches of it has come undone due to the stitching has broken. The backside is a rough texture common to leather. The hole reinforcement is slightly rough. The leather keeper is securely attached and has a small area of surface cracking. The top of the sling is a mixture of smooth, some surface cracking, and some areas of normal surface wear. The leather is strong and pliable. It is stamped within a rectangle: M. We do not believe this to be the year of manufacture. But rather a lot or other identification number. Currently not sure what this is for.
