This is the Early Longer, 4th Pattern Sling, with the wide prong hook at one end and a brass stud loop at the other end. The sling is approximatley 1 1/4″ wide x 70″ long. The sling has the oval holes. This sling is made from a single length of leather, NOT the salvage civil war musket slings that were sewen together. The leather is soft and supple. Some surface cracks, no crazing on the surface of the leather. No breaks through the leather. It has the original sling keepers. Still has the original dark brown color. The sling is faintly marked with the inspector initals at the tip of the sling. No other visible markings or dates. The sling is used, please see photo’s for condition. Vintage Indian War US Army Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Leather Rifle Sling. This is the very early 2 piece sewn together style that was made from leftover Civil War slings. What you see is exactly what you get. This sling measures just about 68 in length. The leather is fairly supple for as old as it is. It is missing the brass tab at the end and does have a crack that has a repair in that spot. (See pictures) Stitching is very good at sewn spot, brass hook at top seems a little frail. I do not see any makers marks but I could be looking in the wrong spot.
