Pre-WWI British Army Leather Sling for the Lee-Metford or SMLE Lee-Enfield Rifle – Dated 1910 – Original – RARE. The leather is soft and supple. Some wrinkling on the surface of the leather, no cracking or crazing of the leather. The sling is approximately 46 in overall length. It is marked: C. Bussey & Geld, 1910. These slings were made in small factories during the Korean War and are super hard to find, especially in this condition! America sent thousands of 1903 and M1 rifles to the Republic of Korea (AKA: South Korea) to defend themselves against Communist aggression. This sling is in Very Good + condition. I believe some were also supplied with Big Bore model 375 rifles. 1 wide leather strap branded with the Marlin horse and rider logo. Blued steel hardware, swivels and buckle all are in excellent condition, with one of the swivels having a trace of rust on the knurled part… Easily cleaned up, but will leave that to the new owner. Soft, pliable leather is not dried out or cracked at all and shows just a hint of use. Sling is 43 long and shows no real signs of wear. It is made of thick leather with smooth basket weave on one side and clean, stain free buck skin on the back. Also has two brass Chicago type screws with ornate face on the front and slotted screw head on the back. This is quite a rare piece of his work. Arvo Ojala was the famed gun slinger, trainer, actor, and fast draw champion. Among the TV and film stars that Ojala taught to shoot included James Arness, Robert Culp, James Garner, Kevin Kline, Paul Newman, Hugh O’Brian, Clint Walker, Thomas F. Wilson, and even Marilyn Monroe. He was a close personal friend to Audie Murphy with Murphy becoming Arvo’s children’s Godfather. Arvo is the unnamed man shot by Marshal Matt Dillon in the opening sequences of the long-running television series Gunsmoke. As a joke on the producers, James Arness and Arvo actually did the opener once with Dillon falling to the ground. Arvo actually taught Dillon how to fast draw, and taught many actors in Hollywood in his day. Any leather work by Ojala is highly prized, and difficult to find, especially in this condition. I have yet to see a rifle sling made by him. Both rifle and sling were then stored in a smoke free environment until one month ago. The leather is in beautiful condition with no cracks, separations, or loose stitching. Would make a great addition to a Arvo Ojala collection, or any western collection. This item is western museum quality. Of course, you could just add it to a favorite rifle. This is a real collector piece and I doubt that an item like this could be easily found.
