Original and nice early Indian War single hook leather sling for the U. 45-70 caliber Trapdoor rifle. This original 68 inch sling was the earliest sling used on the M1873 Trapdoor Rifle and were manufactured from re-cycled Civil War musket slings. The sling would be correct for any Trapdoor rifle manufactured from 1874 until the mid 1880′s until early variations of the M1887 sling were manufactured and used. This one is the real thing. It was likely mounted on a m1903 or Rifle U. Model of 1917, but it could also have not seen use until a war later, on an M1 Garand. No cracks, splits, or deep mars, but it should be heavily conditioned before even mounting on a rifle. Note curved hooks and original keepers. Can’t read the inscription fully, but the date is 1918, and there’s an inspector’s mark below that. I would NOT use this for serious carry on a rifle. It’s 98 years old, and they tend to split preciptously. A lot of these saw use in and after the Second World War, as the “Great War” finished with several million on order/delivered after the Armistice. This offering is for an original WWII Leather Sling For a Garand or Springfield Rifle. The sling is maker stamped on one end but the name is hard to make out, the date 1943 is visible but again the 3 is hard to make out. The sling is fully adjustable with all original hardware still in pace. I think the way the makers marking is positioned on the belt it’s probably a Hickok but it’s pretty hard to say for sure. The leather surface does not appear to have ever been oiled or conditioned and is a little dry. There is minor flaking and cracking but no rips tears or repairs.
