Vintage highly collectable Arvo Ojala padded basket weave rifle sling in very good condition. Sling made in Ca. Before shop closed it’s doors in 1980s. Sling is 43 long and shows no real signs of wear. It is made of thick leather with smooth basket weave on one side and clean, stain free buck skin on the back. Also has two brass Chicago type screws with ornate face on the front and slotted screw head on the back. This is quite a rare piece of his work. Arvo Ojala was the famed gun slinger, trainer, actor, and fast draw champion. Among the TV and film stars that Ojala taught to shoot included James Arness, Robert Culp, James Garner, Kevin Kline, Paul Newman, Hugh O’Brian, Clint Walker, Thomas F. Wilson, and even Marilyn Monroe. He was a close personal friend to Audie Murphy with Murphy becoming Arvo’s children’s Godfather. Arvo is the unnamed man shot by Marshal Matt Dillon in the opening sequences of the long-running television series Gunsmoke. As a joke on the producers, James Arness and Arvo actually did the opener once with Dillon falling to the ground. Arvo actually taught Dillon how to fast draw, and taught many actors in Hollywood in his day. Any leather work by Ojala is highly prized, and difficult to find, especially in this condition. I have yet to see a rifle sling made by him. Both rifle and sling were then stored in a smoke free environment until one month ago. The leather is in beautiful condition with no cracks, separations, or loose stitching. Would make a great addition to a Arvo Ojala collection, or any western collection. This item is western museum quality. Of course, you could just add it to a favorite rifle. This is a real collector piece and I doubt that an item like this could be easily found.
